G2 has been around essentially since the commencement of RLCS, joining the scene way back in Season 2, and are a powerhouse across many games. And their performance in Rocket League has been no different, with regional titles in season 5 and 9, a heart wrenching worlds final loss in season 7, and an ELEAGUE LAN title scattered in for good measure, as well as many titles throughout the new RLCS X and 2021-2022 format.
So with their past history, G2 came into the season as one of North America’s big favourites, seemingly proving so in Fall with a 2nd place ranking regionally. But after arriving in LAN, everything changed. G2 were absolutely dismantled by Sandrock in MENA’s RLCS debut, faltered under pressure against SAM’s Furia, and were then eliminated by Endpoint, sending them home in 9th-11th place.
For a team that’s rarely placed anywhere outside the top few for around 6 seasons, this was a crushing blow for G2, and change seemed inevitable. And with JKnaps and Chicago being solidified as a duo, that unlucky member of the lineup was young phenom dreaz, who was sent away to Team Envy in exchange for the mechanically gifted Atomic.
After a short period of difficulty, with a loss to V1 sending them home in 5th-6th for regional 1, G2 picked up the slack late in Winter and now present themselves as a serious contender in LA. They were dominant in 1st in the second event and solid with 3rd in the third, utilising their strong offensive variety and capabilities to overwhelm their opposition, seeding themselves once again as NA’s #2.
With the team now finding themselves back at LAN, G2 has a lot to prove. Yet with the ferocity of international competition, and the pressure of Atomic making his RLCS LAN debut, that could be a difficult matter for G2, who find themselves pitted against BDS in group B.
If they can find their feet early against Team Secret and EG, and continue with confidence throughout the event, then G2 is not a team to take lightly, and is one of the teams capable of taking out the whole event.
