Day 1 of the 2nd event of winter has begun for OCE, and it wasn’t without interesting results, with some teams faltering in groups, whilst others had breakout wins.
Ground Zero and Renegades Return To Form:
In the last regional, Ground Zero hugely underperformed, finishing 7th-8th, and Renegades had a disappointing championship Sunday to place 3rd, which for two teams used to battling it out in grands, were definite disappointments.
However, both Ground Zero and the Renegades responded perfectly on day 1, placing 1st in both their groups to put themselves in the ideal position to return to the top for the rest of the weekend.
New Champions Falter Early:
Dire Wolves and Forkidden were the two big breakout teams of the last event, but today, they met their match in groups, getting swept by R!OT and Bandits respectively.
Although both teams responded with 3-0 wins in the first round of lower bracket, with Dire Wolves looking especially hungry with 17 goals in 3 games, today was certainly a wake up call for these two rising teams, who will now need to do the hard yards if they want to keep themselves in good stead for the major.
Clarity Take Advantage Of Situation:
Clarity’s roster may have a lot of experience behind them, but having not even qualified for the last event, no one could’ve expected them to be where they are right now.
As expected, Clarity faced big defeats at the hands of Ground Zero and Wildcard, conceding 10 goals to their 1 against GZ and losing game 1 to Wildcard 9-1, which put them in an awkward position.
Yet fortunately for Clarity, Physicists forfeited their matches on the day, for reasons unknown to the public, meaning they scraped into playoffs. And that opportunity for a lifeline was all they needed, taking down the in form 1620 Kings 3-1, where superior defensive rotations helped secure their first top 8 finish of the season, where they will come up against Forkidden tomorrow.
