After our first edition of power rankings with NA, our focus now shifts to Europe following their recent regional event, which certainly threw a spanner into the works!
Team BDS
Whatever you do, do not let one off day make you forget how good of a team BDS are. They placed 1st overall in Europe for the Fall split, including a dominant playoffs showing at the Stockholm major.
As well as this, they still managed to place third in the recent event, despite Monkey Moon’s bout with Covid, and are arguably still Europe, and the world’s, best team.
2. Dignitas
Third place overall in Europe for Fall, and second place in last weekend’s event, displays that this star studded lineup of ScrubKilla, ApparentlyJack and Joreuz is certainly not one to take lightly.
Although their consistency has at times waned, especially in their Stockholm quarter finals upset loss to SMPR and on day 1 of the Apollo Open, Dignitas’ best is enough to perfect sweep BDS, and should be scary for any team in competition with them.
3. Endpoint
#1 seed in the regular season of the Fall split and top 8 at the major shows that Endpoint, led by young prodigy Seiko, is a team that’s here to stay.
And even though their 4th placed finish on the weekend was no breakout performance, they were still able to beat Vitality, who qualified for the last major, twice, as well as a win against rising super team Karmine Corp, with only losses to the two teams above them, cementing Endpoint as a high level tier 1 team.
4. Team Queso
The cheese has officially arrived, and wow did they look scary. Queso topped group B, one of the strongest with Dignitas, Misfits and Rix, before going on an astonishing playoffs run where they beat Williams Resolve, smashed BDS and dismantled Dignitas to secure a first place finish.
Despite the astonishing result, Queso only finished in a tie for 9th in Europe’s Fall split, meaning that more consistency will need to be displayed before they can edge higher up the list to properly challenge the big 3.
5. SMPR Esports
Coming in 9th-12th place in regional event 1 was certainly not ideal for SMPR, although they weren’t entirely to blame. They had good wins in groups over Kuxir‘s Minions and Williams Resolve, but the unfortunate nature of tiebreakers meant they slunk to 3rd place in group C, setting up a dog fight 2-3 loss to French super stars Karmine Corp.
Although not a passable result for a team with this much talent, one shouldn’t forget their top 4 finish at the Stockholm major and Fall consistency as one of just 3 teams to make all 3 playoffs, in the company of BDS and Dignitas, meaning you can rest assured that SMPR will bounce back.
6. Karmine Corp
Some may be disappointed at the 7th place finish from Karmine Corp to start off Winter, but they certainly showed some promise. After dismantling Vitality in groups, Karmine Corp followed up with a commanding win over major top 4 placed team SMPR.
Despite a flurry of good performances, both this split and last, KC are plagued with a lack of consistency that caused their self destruction at the hands of Dignitas and failure to qualify for last split’s major, which will need to drastically improve if they want to bridge the gap with the top flight teams.
7. Luminosity Gaming
One of the most unfortunate, yet promising, runs came from the quickly rising Luminosity in the Apollo Open regional. Following their hard work in the off season, Luminosity blitzed the closed qualifier with a perfect 3-0 record, before a 2-1 finish in groups, with only a game 5 overtime loss to #1 ranked BDS stopping them, having Luminosity looking in good shape.
Unfortunately the playoffs bracket was not kind to the rising stars as they came up against Dignitas, where although looking solid in being only 1 of 2 teams to take a game of Dignitas in their lower bracket run, were still thoroughly outclassed, exhibiting that there’s work to do before Luminosity can make a case for the major.
8. Team Vitality
A huge cloud of doubt surrounded Vitality heading into the Winter split. After scraping into the Major, where they hugely disappointed with their 1-3 record, questions were asked about how well Vitality could perform.
A 5th place finish was certainly above our expectations, however, it should be taken with a grain of salt, given Vitality were lucky to come out of groups after a big loss to Karmine Corp and defeat at the hands of Endpoint, as well as a 4-0 sweep by Dignitas showing that even if they’re capable of beating lower level teams, the road to the major in the next two events will be difficult.
9. William Resolve
Another surprise from the Apollo Event was Williams Resolve, who after placing 9th in Fall, produced a performance to remember. After topping a group containing strong contenders Evil Geniuses and SMPR, as well as the experienced Kuxir’s Minions, Williams Resolve locked in a top 6 finish.
Although they were unable to go any further than 5th, with a heartbreaking game 7 overtime loss to Queso and devastating sweep from Dignitas, they proved that they are capable of beating medium level teams, and certainly warrant a spot on this list.
10. Evil Geniuses
After missing out on major qualification by the skin of their teeth in the last split, EG would’ve been certainly looking for a top 6 finish in the Apollo Open, but failed to perform on that promise.
Although their offense looked strong in victory against SMPR, they were defeated twice by Williams Resolve and once by Vitality, the two teams above them on this list, and despite all three series’ going to a game 5, they didn’t show enough to warrant a higher placement.
