Since the beginning of the RLO Swipe Series, Schmory has completely dominated the 1s events, winning 5/5, including Tuesday’s performance where he failed to drop even a single game.
Yet in 2s, his presence has been slightly less commanding, and after a week 1 win with Pyskizzle, the team seriously struggled, only achieving top 4 once in the following 3 weeks.
Despite the disappointing results by Schmory’s high standards that have been set by his 1s dominance, the team, ‘6-inch Sub’, still sat in a comfortable 2nd place on the leaderboard. But even with the high ranking, the team’s chemistry and capabilities were quickly declining, and the team made a mutual decision to part ways.
That meant that with just 3/7 weeks left of 2s, and almost everybody paired up, Schmory was left pointless, partnerless, and seemingly out of playoffs contention for 2s.
Thankfully, a solo queue into 2s seems to have saved OCE’s 1s legend. It was here that Schmory and Sour were pitted against Scarth/Matro, the fearsome 3 time winners, and upon liking what he saw, with limited other options and time remaining, Schmory out through a Hail Mary offer to form a new team, ‘Sour S’mores’.
However, early in the tournament, it appeared that this last minute team was going to end as a complete failure and put Schmory out of playoffs contention for 2s. In groups, they fell 2-1 to Semicircle's Hammertoes and Fin, putting their backs immediately against the wall going into playoffs.
It was here, in playoffs, that Sour S'mores defied all odds to scrape through one of the toughest possible brackets. In the first round of playoffs, they played off against Underdogs, the competition's 4th ranked team with Dark.King and Avenged7 on the team, yet secured a solid 2-0 to advance to quarter finals, where they found themselves in another tough contest against 6th ranked Imagine Losing, comprised of Portal and Lobby144, where they clinched a 2-1 victory to progress to semi finals.
Heading into the semis, Sour S'mores had racked up a solid 60 points, but with only 2 more weeks to play, they needed more if they were to stand any chance of making Finals. Standing in there way, the 3-time reigning champs, Scarth/Matro.
Though early on in the series, it became clear that Schmory refused to go down without a fight, getting a hat trick of goals before the half way point of game 1 where he displayed calmness and precision against Scarth/Matro's apparent confusion. Yet once game 2 arrived, the defence of Scarth/Matro appeared far more organised, and their poise in preventing Schmory's onslaught, whilst taking advantage of Sour's inexperience, left the series all tied up. In a nail biting game 3, where neither team looked like giving an inch, it was Sour who made the difference, beating both defenders to set up goal 1 and finishing a second to lock in the game victory, series win, and an all important grand final berth.
With 80 points and $300 USD locked in, Sour S'mores were still hungry for more as they faced up against Deathlikepeak/Ocean, who were yet to drop a game on the night and were rank #2, in grands. Nonethless, they were unfazed in this matchup, and Schmory looked near unstoppable, producing some unbelievable stalls and reads to dismantle Deathlikepeak/Ocean, securing a 3-0 sweep, $500 USD, and a critical 101 circuit points.
It's amazing to see such dominance from Schmory, no matter the team, with Sour playing the perfect supporting role, and they'll definitely be a scary team in weeks to come, and hopefully, in Finals.
