One of the biggest risers in the Winter Split, Version1 have more than deserved their 4th seeding in North America. After a tough 8th placement in Fall, going from top 4 in the first to an 0-3 15th-16th to finish, it was clear that something needed to change at V1.

The obvious choice would have been Comm, the largely unproven of the 3. Yet V1 held firm with the rising Comm, and instead chose to break up the long time duo of Gimmick and Torment, with world champion Gimmick sent to Oxygen.

And in his place? One of the biggest rising stars of North American Rocket League, Beastmode. After departing from Shopify Rebellion midway through Fall to chase sporting glory, the 16 year old phenom was back on the market for Winter, and V1 lunged at the opportunity. When paired with Comm’s relentless off ball aggression, and Torment, a world champion and MVP, as the rock in defence, V1 immediately seemed to be one of North America’s new top teams.

In Regional Event 1, they were hot from the get go, topping the group of death to secure a top 6 finish, before their second win over G2 for the event, conquering their game 7 curse in a nail biting 4-3 win, locked in top 4.

Heading into the second regional, expectations were reasonably hopeful on V1 as a top 5 team, but they appeared to have lost their initial flair from the first event. After coming a goal away from qualifying for uppers in groups, V1 found themselves in a grudge match with Gimmick’s Oxygen, a match in which they were thoroughly beaten, and sent packing outside of top 8.

With this disappointment, V1 were placed outside the top 5, with a repetition of Fall seemingly looming. But they weren’t finished yet, and neither was the organization, who set up a boot camp at their Minnesota based HQ in a last ditch effort to make it to LA.

V1 not only made it to LA, but they did it in style. After securing top 6 with a dominant 9-0 sweep of groups, V1’s prowess only grew stronger as the event wore on. Following a shaky 4-3 against Complexity, the nerves were gone on Sunday as the team clinched the major, expressing their joy with two devastating victories over NA’s top 2 in G2 and NRG to win the whole thing, only dropping 6 games on the way.

Beastmode’s mechanics on offence and his ability to find the net is astonishing, Comm has become one of the most difficult players to play against with his unpredictability and suffocating aggression, and Torment is as solid a third man as a team can ask for.

V1’s peak is very high, and they put that on full display in the final event of Winter. However their peak, is also very low. As a team, they’re highly unpredictable, and will be going into LA as one of the biggest unknowns in the whole event.

V1, aside from Torment (who’s a world champion, MVP, Dreamhack champion and overall LAN veteran), are generally deprived of LAN experience. Beastmode has never played on LAN, and Comm only in extremely small aspects with Dreamhack, which could present an issue with the 5000 screaming fans within the Youtube Theater.

In addition, they’ve also got a tough group to deal with. Although a matchup with DeToNator should secure their top 12 finish, the series’ with rising stars Queso and super team FaZe could prove a tough ask, and leave V1 in for a long event.

Hopefully, V1 are able to continue their form from the third event onto the big stage and make a break out run, but they can’t afford to have any lapses like they did in the regular split, and will be pushed to their limit from the get go
